Hawaii, and more particularly Hilo, has a large Filipino community.   In case you haven't heard there is an excellent and very successful designer you should meet.

Kenneth Cobonpue is a Filipino industrial designer who specializes in furniture, light fixtures and art.  He has a unique ability to bring a new modern look to Asian rooted designs while integrating raw materials.  He exhibits his work worldwide each year at trade shows.  You can check out his website at  kennethcobonpue.com
and some of his products at designbyhive.com.

The most recognizable pieces by Kenneth Cobonpue are from the Oasis Collection.

It's one thing to be a great designer, but another to use your talents to help others.  Last September Kenneth Cobonpue curated an Exhibit for Breast Cancer Awareness and auctioned off several of his own pieces like this one, Coral Fan.  The proceeds were donated to the Philippine Foundation for Breast Care, which will be used to increase the patient load of the government-run East Avenue Medical Center's Breast Care Center. There is a desperate need as
1 in 13 Filipinos falls victim to Breast Cancer.  This makes it the highest rate in Southeast Asia.

The Tilt Collection is handmade.  Its precise details make it a work of art.

This chair lives up to its name, Bloom. Its petals are incredibly soft and cozy.

Many examples of modern architecture have such a strong character that the furniture is easily lost.  Cobonpue's pieces never seem to have that problem and hold their own in any situation.

Modern Tropical Home in Vietnam

Designed by MM++ Architects this modern tropical residence is located in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.  Three generations live in this four story suburban house.

This project has a few great details, the the raised sofa base turns into the bottom tread of the stairs. The stairs have rails that extend to the ceiling

I strongly think that instead of the black window and door trim that a dark brown would provide a less harsh contrast and less industrial feel.

Gravity Light - pollution free lighting

Brilliant idea and awesome work for a huge problem without pollution or expense.  5 stars!

Gravity Light was designed to replace kerosene lamps throughout Africa using the power of gravity to run the light.  It provides over 30mins of LED lighting as it takes 26lb bag to drop before the bag needs to be raised again.  the UK development team is working on an improved model with will again be assembled in Africa to provide jobs within the communities that use Gravity Light. The cost ends up being $5 to the end user and with in 6 weeks of switching from kerosene to Gravity Light users save money.

Domestic Transformer - Hong Kong

Architect Gary Chang has been a favorite of mine since 2010 when I saw how he redesigned his childhood 330 sf Hong Kong apartment.  With pushing walls that are on ceiling and wall tracks Gary can transform his space into 24 different rooms.  Today's design needs are increasing along with populations in big city, there are few options than challenging our stander design practices.
Design smarter, design forward.

Even the German car company, Audi known for their engineering and ingenuity has a youtube video on this apartment.  Want to bet they are disappointed they didn't design it first?  Designboom has a great interview with some of Chang's original sketches too.

Christian's active apartment

Why add more space when you can just transform the space you have?
Christian Schallert has a small 258 square foot apartment in a hip neighborhood of Barcelona.  The brilliance of the space is that all storage is pulled against the walls with open space in the center.  The furniture can then fold out into the circulation space in the center which configures the room into
a kitchen, lounge, dining or bedroom.

Christian calls it an active apartment because he is always re-configuring it throughout the day based on his needs and jokes that it keeps him in top shape.
