In April, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved upgrades to the atrium of the Ford Foundation Building in NYC. The building was completed in 1967 and was granted individual and interior landmark status as soon as it was eligible in 1997. It is no surprise then that Gensler was chosen to design the upgrades for the Ford Foundation, who's commitment is to equity and human rights. The changes mainly focus on bringing it up to code, new sprinklers, smoke exhaust, pathway, wide enough for two wheelchairs, ADA doors and an ADA lift. The other changes emphasize restoring designer Dan Kiley’s original intent by reducing the number of light fixtures from 90 to 28, removing a pool and plants. The upgrades should be complete in 2018.
