In April, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved upgrades to the atrium of the Ford Foundation Building in NYC. The building was completed in 1967 and was granted individual and interior landmark status as soon as it was eligible in 1997. It is no surprise then that Gensler was chosen to design the upgrades for the Ford Foundation, who's commitment is to equity and human rights. The changes mainly focus on bringing it up to code, new sprinklers, smoke exhaust, pathway, wide enough for two wheelchairs, ADA doors and an ADA lift. The other changes emphasize restoring designer Dan Kiley’s original intent by reducing the number of light fixtures from 90 to 28, removing a pool and plants. The upgrades should be complete in 2018. Finally progress on the Naniloa Lobby! Still missing some key elements, right now it looks plain and not luxurious yet. Keep fingers crossed. Hawaii, and more particularly Hilo, has a large Filipino community. In case you haven't heard there is an excellent and very successful designer you should meet.
Hilgard Garden is a stunning work by Mary Barensfeld's architecture and landscape firm in San Francisco. Full of modernist slices and rich cliffs of foliage it juxtaposes modern architectural elements like raw concrete and steel with garden green and rich woods. What's most impressive is how luxurious and spacious it feels but the neighbors are quite close. Here is just a taste, for more info checkout Hilgard Garden on the Barensfeld website.
