Three US companies are using hydroponics to grow food in shipping containers. These stackable shipping containers are insulated and have climate control systems and lighting enabling you to grow high volumes of greens even in dense cities year round. Because of their efficient design they use drastically less water and produce significantly higher yield in a shorter time than all conventional production methods. Hydroponics has been around for a while, it is a method of growing plants with a nutrient enriched water and no soil is needed.
The 40' Growtainer container prototypes are currently located at The Texas A & M Agrilife Research Center in Dallas.
PodPonics was founded in 2010 in Georgia, its fresh, pesticide-free produce can be found at hundreds of grocery stores and select farmer’s markets throughout the Southeast. They have even opened a farm in Dubai in April 2014.
